History
Haldenwang Castle, experience the living tradition of the Barons of Freyberg-Eisenberg.
History of the castle
The castle was built around 1480 and has been owned by the family of the Freyberg-Eisenberg barons since 1524. In 1860 it was rebuilt and neo-Gothicized by Rudolf von Freyberg-Eisenberg in the style of the time. The family lived there until the end of the Second World War. In 1945 it was occupied by the US Army. It then served as a home for displaced war invalids and subsequently as a refugee home. Finally, Georg Freiherr von Freyberg-Eisenberg renovated the castle in 1983/84 and made it accessible to the public for celebrations and cultural events.
Since July 2023, Schloss Haldenwang has been owned by Michael Freiherr von Freyberg-Eisenberg, Georg‘s grandson.
History of the family
The noble family of Freyberg is said to have originated in Rome. A Curius had fled from there to Graubünden because of his Christian faith. The family then moved from there to Swabia in the middle of the 11th century.
The former imperial barons played an important and widespread role in the Bavarian-Central Swabian region. They belonged to the Swabian Imperial Knighthood and, from 1666, to the Swabian Counts’ Bench of the Imperial Diet.
They provided several bishops and royal ministers and their political involvement continues to this day. Most recently, Georg Freiherr von Freyberg-Eisenberg was a long-standing member of the Bavarian state parliament. Georg von Freyberg-Eisenberg – Wikipedia
